How to share a camera with someone

Give a family member, colleague or guest access to one or more of your cameras, and choose exactly what they can do with them.

Written by Pavel Kuba

You can let someone else watch your cameras without giving them your login. Sharing has two steps: first you invite the person to a Location, then you choose which cameras in that Location they can see and what they can do with them.

Before you start

Step 1: Invite the person

  1. Open your dashboard and pick the Location from the Locations menu at the top.

  2. In the Shared with users box, click Share to user.

  3. Enter the person's email address and click Share [Location name] with user.

  4. They'll receive an invitation email. They need to sign in (or create a free account) and accept the invitation on their Space Memberships page. Until then, they show as Pending invitation.

Tip: you can also invite people from User Management → + Add new user.

Step 2: Choose which cameras they can see

By default, a shared user can see every camera in the Location. To share only some cameras:

  1. Go to User Management → Users and click the person's name.

  2. Scroll to the section for your Location and make sure its toggle is on.

  3. Under Camera permissions, switch on what the person should be able to do, for example View Live Video and View Recording.

  4. Next to View Live Video, click the link in the Apply for column. In the Select Camera window, tick the cameras you want to share and click Apply. Leave everything unticked to share all cameras.

  5. Repeat for View Recording and View Clip Vault if you've switched them on. Each has its own camera list.

What each camera permission allows

  • View Live Video – watch live video. Most other camera permissions need this one switched on first.

  • Camera Status Notifications – get notified when a camera goes offline or comes back online.

  • Camera Configuration – change camera settings.

  • View Recording – play back Cloud Recording.

  • Control Recording – turn Cloud Recording on or off.

  • Save to Clip Vault – save video clips to the Clip Vault.

  • View Clip Vault – watch clips saved in the Clip Vault.

  • Manage Broadcasting – change public broadcasting settings.

  • Manage Timelapses – create and configure timelapses.

Good to know

  • Incident Notifications gives the person temporary access to all cameras and speakers in the Location during an incident, including cameras you didn't select.

  • Administrator Access gives the person every permission in your Space. Only turn it on for people you fully trust.

  • Sharing with many people? Create a Group with the right permissions and add people to it. See Managing Users, Groups & Permissions.
